PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)
View of the Round, Winchester and Store Towers in Windsor Castle
c. 1790RCIN 914566
Sandby drew the Round Tower at various times of day, in this case in evening sunlight. The Tower, under repair, is surrounded by trees and cottages with just a few figures. These melancholic details all evoke gradual decline and decay, and would have appealed to the contemporary taste for picturesque ruins.
