The Finding of Cyrus
c. 1655-60RCIN 903953
The grandfather of Cyrus the Great ordered that he be slain as an infant, following a prophecy that one day Cyrus would overthrow him. The man entrusted with the murder instead handed the baby over to a shepherdess, who substituted her own still-born child. When Cyrus was eventually restored to his parents, his survival was attributed to him being suckled by a bitch on the mountainside. And in time, of course, Cyrus did depose his grandfather.
