The difference between this drawing and the two large monochrome oils of this subject of the previous decade (cats 54 – 55) is instructive. Gone are the bold architectural frameworks: here the space is defined almost entirely by the figures, stacked up the sheet of paper, with three columns as a mere backdrop.
