ABRAHAM BLOOTELING (1640-90) AFTER SIR PETER LELY (1618–1680)

Charles II

c.1680-90

RCIN 602538

Blooteling's monumental portrait of Charles II is one of an ambitious trio which also included prints of James, Duke of York, and Charles's eldest (illegitimate) son, the Duke of Monmouth. Derived from portraits by Peter Lely, they mark the pinnacle of mezzotint production in the seventeenth century. Each mezzotint plate produced a limited number of fine impressions characterised by strong contrasts and velvety tones.
