The Lord Mayor's Water-Procession on the Thames

c.1683

RCIN 402608

This view records the magnificent flotilla of barges that sailed to Westminster to commemorate Sir Henry Tulse being sworn in as Lord Mayor of London on 29 October 1683. In the background is the sprawling palace of Whitehall, with crowds gathered on the roof outside the Queen's Withdrawing Room. This is a rare depiction of the newly built apartments for Charles II, known as the ‘Volary lodgings’, located to the left of the Privy Stairs (also crowded with spectators). They were begun in 1667 and provided the king with a new State Bedchamber overlooking the river.
