SIR ROBERT VYNER (1631-88)

Garter Collar and Great George

Badge 1661; collar c.1685

RCIN 441924

This magnificent Great George, the badge of the Order of the Garter, was made for Charles II by the goldsmith Robert Vyner in 1661. According to the Book of the robes and jewels belonging to the king it is set with 20 large and 100 small diamonds. Following the Restoration, it was necessary to make both the badge and collar anew because the Commonwealth government had sold off those belonging to Charles I. The collar on which it hangs was made later for James II following his accession in 1685.
