The Coronation of King Charles the II in Westminster Abbey the 23 of April 1661

1662

RCIN 805164

The finest etcher in Restoration London, Wenceslaus Hollar, was commissioned to produce illustrations for John Ogilby's account of the coronation of Charles II. The king appears twice in this view of Westminster Abbey, both at the moment of crowning and afterwards wearing the crown for the gathered crowds to see. Hollar also depicts the magnificent tapestries hung for the occasion and the display of plate on the altar.
