HENDRICK DANCKERTS (C. 1625- 1680)

Hampton Court Palace

c.1670

RCIN 402842

This view shows the old east front of the Tudor palace of Hampton Court with the new canal created for Charles II in the foreground. The canal, known as the Long Water, was excavated during 1661–2 at immense cost. A mile long and flanked by a double avenue of lime trees, it was aligned with the balcony of the bedchamber that was being prepared for Catherine of Braganza. The Dutch artist Danckerts painted a number of views of royal palaces both for Charles II and for clients who wished to show their loyalty to the restored monarchy.
