In this early letter to Henry Oldenburg published in 1675 in Philosophical Transactions, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch businessman and scientist, described his experiment with a cow’s optical nerve. His observations led him to posit the idea, for the first time, that tiny little strings communicate from the eye to the brain, thus leading to the discovery of the optical nerve.
