Charles II is shown wearing the sumptuous robes and insignia of the Order of the Garter, the highest and oldest order of chivalry in England. The collar and badge were supplied to the king in 1661 by the royal goldsmith, Robert Vyner, who also made the new coronation regalia. Garter ceremonies were reinstated after the Restoration and became an important aspect of court life. The Dutch artist Verelst, a highly accomplished flower painter, also found success in London as a painter of people at court.
