The painter Peter Lely, who had trained in Haarlem, in the Netherlands, was one of the most celebrated artists working in Britain at this time. He produced a large number of portraits of the royal family and the leading figures at court. Both the Duke of York and his first wife, Anne Hyde, were frequent patrons of Lely.
