Charles II riding to the State Opening of Parliament

On 8 May 1661, two weeks after his coronation, Charles II presided over his first State Opening of Parliament. This etching depicts the procession passing before Westminster Abbey, the king crowned, enrobed and holding the orb and sceptre. Jubilant spectators are depicted in every available space, some even viewing the procession from the rooftops.
