WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607–1677) AFTER SIR JONAS MOORE (1617–1679)
Tangier
dated 1664RCIN 805360
Catherine of Braganza's dowry included the strategic port of Tangier, on the African coast at the Strait of Gibraltar. Jonas Moore was sent to survey the territory and his work was translated into this impressive map by Hollar, dedicated to the king and queen. Despite Moore describing Tangier as ‘the most considerable place the King of England hath in the world’, it proved to be a huge drain on the nation's finances and was abandoned in 1684.
