WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)
The Coronation of King Charles the II in Westminster Abbey the 23 of April 1661
1662RCIN 805164
Charles II's coronation was the most extravagant since that of Elizabeth I. A magnificent procession took place through London on 22 April 1661, with the coronation taking place the next day, St George's Day, in Westminster Abbey. Illustrations of the event were commissioned from the finest etchers in London. In this interior view of the Abbey, the king appears twice, both at the moment of crowning and afterwards wearing the crown before the gathered crowds.
