The execution of Charles I

The majority of images of the execution of Charles I were produced by printmakers on the Continent because of censorship in Britain – this example was probably produced in Amsterdam. The central scene shows the executioner holding aloft the severed head of the king. On the day of his father's death, Charles II was already in exile in The Hague.
