SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)

Evening gown

1957

RCIN 200124

In 1957 The Queen made her first ever visit to the United States of America as a guest of President Eisenhower. During the visit The Queen wore this elegant pale green crinoline gown for a dinner at the British Embassy. The crinoline-skirted evening gown was one of Norman Hartnell’s signature house-styles, and is typical of the designs produced for The Queen by the couturier during the 1950s and 1960s.
