In this richly ornamented scene, Princess Beatrice is depicted as the personification of the Indian Empire. Beatrice wore Queen Victoria’s Indian jewellery and, according to the queen, was ‘draped most correctly in beautiful stuffs which Abdul [Karim] had helped to arrange’. Princess Alix of Hesse (1872–1918) on the left and Princess Louise of Wales (1867–1931) perform the roles of attendants. Abdul Karim stands in the left of the background. Khairat Ali kneels on the left of the group and presents Beatrice with a golden plate. Also included are Mohamed Bukhsh, who stands third from right, and Saiyad Ahmed Hussain on the right.
