GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Princess Louis of Hesse, with Willem Jerve Koetjie, Balmoral

c. 1863

RCIN 2941335

Princess Alice (1843–78) was Queen Victoria’s second daughter. The princess is pictured here seated on her horse at Balmoral. On the left stands Willem Jerve Kotjie (1850–67) who was born to an African father and Malaysian mother. Koetjie joined Princess Alice’s household on 23 June 1863 after travelling from Java with Baron Schenk-Schmittburg. He was 13 when he was employed within Princess Alice’s household. Following Willem’s death from consumption in August 1867, the princess wrote to her mother that 'It quite upset me not to find him, for I was really attached to him, and he learnt so well, and was in many ways so nice, though of course troublesome too at times.’
