JACOB HUYSMANS (C. 1633-96)
Frances Stewart, later Duchess of Richmond (1647-1702)
1664?RCIN 405876
During the seventeenth century it became increasingly common for women to wear masculine-inspired clothing as fashionable items, however this did not usually extend to the type of military attire displayed here. Frances Stuart wears a buff coat, with her hair styled to resemble a male periwig, and carries a baton of command – as Pepys notes she is dressed “like a soldier”. Interestingly, however, the coat follows the conical silhouette of the fashionable female torso at the time.
