LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

Designs for an equestrian monument

c.1517-18

RCIN 912360

Leonardo planned a third equestrian monument during his last years in France, probably to honour King Francis I. As with his earlier Sforza and Trivulzio monuments, Leonardo considered both a rearing and a walking pose for the horse. But he seems not to have attempted large-scale or physically demanding work in later life, and he did not put his mind to the practicalities of modelling or casting this sculpture.
