WORKSHOP OF LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)
Recto: Horses' fore-legs, including one raised and bent. Verso: A sketch of Leonardo, the head of a youth, and a horse’s legs
c.1517-18RCIN 912300
The horse’s legs are by Leonardo, but an assistant then used the sheet to sketch a smiling youth and a pensive old man with a full beard. Comparison with the portrait of Leonardo at the start of the exhibition, which is close in date, strongly suggests that this too is a depiction of Leonardo, and the only other contemporary likeness of the artist.
