HENDRICK TER BRUGGHEN (DEVENTER 1588-UTRECHT 1629)

A laughing Bravo with a Bass Viol and a Glass

Signed and dated 1625

Oil on canvas | 104.8 x 85.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405531

This is a study of a moment’s encounter with a carefree low-lifer. Appropriately the painting seems to have been executed in a rapid, careless style, using cheap earth colours. The structure of the instrument and subtly observed reflections in the glass make it clear that this is very artful carelessness.
