SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN 1577 - ANTWERP 1640)

Winter: The Interior of a Barn

c.1618-19

Oil on canvas | 121.4 x 223.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401417

This is a barn of operatic proportions, in which we find cattle, horses, milkmaids working and vagrants warming themselves by the fire, with multiple views of the farmyard and village beyond. The man leaning on his stick was originally at the left edge; Rubens has added a substantial section of canvas here, perhaps to match the width of Summer.

Acquired as a pair with Summer, by Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1747
