With this self-portrait Rubens introduced himself to Charles I as a gentleman and courtier. He also demonstrated how seductively he could paint, with flowing lines, a rich paint surface and luminous, harmonious colour. Generations of artists studied Rubens’ flesh tones, seeking to understand how he made features so solid, tactile and vivacious.
