ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641)
The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine
c. 1630Oil on canvas | 126.2 x 119.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405332
In this mature religious subject, van Dyck is inspired by the areas of pure colour and landscape backgrounds of Titian. The emotional heart of the composition is the ‘marriage’ itself, in the contrast between the pudgy pitying Christ Child and the dishevelled saint, with her wheel and palm of martyrdom.
