Though signed by Rembrandt, this work was thought to be by an imitator until its free handling was recently recognised as the work of the master. Expressive heads of this kind were called tronies in the seventeenth century and were collected as character studies and painterly exercises.
Acquired by George III as part of the Consul Smith Collection in 1762
