RCIN 404918
Lely was a Dutch painter who spent his career in England, perpetuating the manner of Anthony van Dyck. He presents the young Princess Mary, daughter of James II, as Diana the Huntress with a crescent moon on her forehead. In 1677 she married her first cousin, William III of Orange, with whom she ruled Great Britain after 1688.
