JORIS CLAES (1580-1628)

Porringer

RCIN 51278

The complex imagery on this porringer, featuring two scenes from Genesis, suggests a familiarity with the writings of Menno Simons (1496 – 1561) who founded the Mennonite movement in the Netherlands. Engraved on the base is the name Anna Michiels van Vaerlaer (1583/4 – 1644) who came from a prominent Mennonite family. The exquisite engraving shows extraordinary detail and texture. Probably purchased by George IV in 1826
