The van de Veldes, father and son, arrived in England in 1672 and were commissioned by Lord High Admiral the Duke of York, later James II, to paint a series of 12 scenes of naval engagements. This painting depicts a successful raid on the French colonial island of Martinique during the second Anglo-Dutch War (1665 – 7).
