GODFRIED SCHALCKEN (MADE 1643-THE HAGUE 1706)

The Game of 'Lady, come into the Garden'

RCIN 405343

Schalcken’s biographer makes clear that this painting depicts a fashionable parlour game not a brothel scene. He tells us the name of the game but not the rules; presumably players shed items of clothing when they fail in some task or test. The painting of the different fabrics is masterful. Acquired by George IV in 1803 Cat. 20
