WILLEM VAN MIERIS (LEIDEN 1662-LEIDEN 1747)

The Neglected Lute

RCIN 405543

Van Mieris depicts a stock scene of seduction – a lady ready to play on her lute, plied with oysters and wine. In this eighteenth-century genre scene the setting is no longer a recognisable home, but an imaginary and impossibly palatial stage-set. Acquired by George IV in 1814 Cat. 13
