WILLEM VAN DE VELDE THE YOUNGER (1633-1707)
The "Mary Rose" Action, 28 December 1669
RCIN 405223
This naval painting is one of a series of twelve. For these works the van de Veldes have used high view points and a crowding of incidents (as opposed to the sea-level, atmospheric view of their other oil paintings). This painting depicts the English frigate, the Mary Rose (seen in the right middle distance) successfully defending merchant ships from Barbary pirates.
Commissioned by the Duke of York, later James II
