ADRIAEN VAN DER WERFF (KRALINGEN 1659-ROTTERDAM 1722)
Cimon and Pero
RCIN 406626
Van der Werff, the court painter to the Elector Palatine at Dusseldorf, employed a classical style for historical stories. The subject of ‘Roman Charity’ tells of a noble daughter who saves her imprisoned father from starvation. George IV did not value this high-minded art above a good brothel scene.
Acquired by George IV in 1814
