CHARLES WILD (1781-1835)
The Rose Satin Drawing Room, Carlton House (looking North)
RCIN 922180
This watercolour depicts the central room on the first floor of the garden façade. It is hung with the finest silk and decorated with French furniture and Netherlandish paintings set into ornate, George IV frames. Portraits of Rubens and Van Dyck, preside over a hang arranged in clusters of one-over three. No distinction was made between Dutch and Flemish artists – Adriaen van Ostade's Peasant Cottage hangs between two Dutch landscapes under Teniers's large Peasants Dancing. Both scenes are crudely comic, which was not thought out of place in this refined setting.
