Windsor Castle: The King's Closet, 1816
RCIN 922104
Neglected as a residence, Windsor Castle seems to have been treated as a historic display. Then as now, the King's Closet provides walls for a dense picture hang. Northern Renaissance works predominate with Reymerswaele's famous Misers to the left opposite Holbein's Duke of Norfolk. At the time, the painting immediately over the fireplace was thought of as a disappointing Van Mieris; we consider it an important Vermeer.
