Nooms worked as a sailor on Dutch merchant vessels before he became a painter, and he thus often signed his works ‘Zeeman’, the Dutch for ‘Seaman’. Marine painting was a very popular genre in Dutch art of the seventeenth century, reflecting the importance
of maritime trade to the republic.
