JAMES DIGMAN WINGFIELD (1800-72)
A Summer Afternoon at Hampton Court
Signed and dated 1844RCIN 405371
The gardens at Hampton Court, including the late seventeenth-century maze, were characteristic of the romantic past that fascinated the Victorians. Consequently they were painted a number of times by the landscape painter James Digman Wingfield. Figures dressed in a loose interpretation of early eighteenth-century costume enjoy a picnic on the lawns of the Great Fountain Garden in the manner of a fête champêtre.
