FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (PITIGLIANO 1702-FLORENCE 1788)
Landscape with a Temple and Cascade, Figures and Cattle
1760-69RCIN 404391
Italian pastoral landscapes such as this one, depicting the wild beauty of the area around Rome known as the Campagna, provided a model for the English landscape garden. The Temple of the Sibyl, a classical ruin near Tivoli, appears on the right. It featured in many paintings by Claude Lorrain and his followers, and became the most frequently copied ancient building re-created in the eighteenth-century gardens of Britain.
