Knots were garden beds laid out geometrically, planted with low hedges of evergreens such as lavender and thyme. They were already an established favourite in English gardens by the time published patterns started to appear in the late sixteenth century. These elegant designs were not restricted to outdoor use, but found a host of other internal decorative uses in embroidery, marquetry and ceiling ornament.
