The Profitable arte of gardening : to this is annexed ... the marveilous govermment, propertie and benefite of bees ... / Thomas Hyll.

This is a rare sixteenth-century image of a modest garden. Fruit trees mark each corner of the plot and a well with a bucket and pulley, rather than an ornamental fountain, provides the only water feature. The garden includes medieval-style trelliswork fencing, but also features elements which were new to the Renaissance garden, such as the ornamental knot in the centre, and the classical gateway.
