This etching shows the north front of Windsor Castle with the area of ground between the castle slopes and the River Thames developed as a formal garden by William III and later Queen Anne. The site was known as the Maestricht Garden on account of a famous re-enactment of the Battle of Maestricht (1673) which took place there a year later. Rows of trees have been planted around the perimeter of the garden, which is dominated by a grand central canal.
