HENRY PHILLIPS (1779-1840)

1831RCIN 1164011
This book by the gardening writer Henry Phillips established a framework for the language of flowers in English for the first time. Specific meanings were given to each flower and flowers could be arranged so as to unite particular concepts. Hence, the union of the Foxglove (Youth) and China Rose (Beauty always New) with Honeysuckle (Bond of love) could be interpreted as ‘Youth and Beauty United by the Bonds of Love’.
