FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)
Queen Victoria with Prince Arthur
Signed and dated 1850RCIN 405963
In 1850, Queen Victoria chose to be portrayed nursing her third son, Prince Arthur, on the recently completed Pavilion Terrace at Osborne House. This portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter was commissioned as a birthday gift for Prince Albert. Winterhalter reverted to the traditional form of the hortus conclusus (the enclosed garden) to represent Queen Victoria and her son as the Virgin and Child in a garden, and sealed the image within a frame that resembles a rose garland.
