The first significant meeting between Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth (now Her Majesty The Queen) took place in July 1939 at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. After the war Prince Philip became a naturalised British subject, renouncing his claim to the Greek throne, and taking his maternal grandfather’s surname, Mountbatten. The engagement between Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was announced on 9 July 1947, and the wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in London on 20 November 1947. The honeymoon was spent at Broadlands, the Mountbattens’ home in Hampshire, and in Scotland. On the eve of the wedding, Prince Philip was created Duke of Edinburgh, Baron Greenwich and Earl of Merioneth. After their marriage the couple were known as The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
