SIR JOSEPH NOËL PATON (1821-1901)

Home (The Return from the Crimea)

Signed and dated 1859

Oil on panel | 71.2 x 57.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406954

Queen Victoria took a keen, personal interest in the progress of the Crimean War and the welfare of the soldiers. In 1856 she commissioned Paton to create this reduced replica of the picture he had recently exhibited at the Royal Academy. This emotional painting depicts an injured soldier, returned home to his family after a tour of service in the Crimea.
