Building a ballroom

The magnificence of Victoria’s costume balls could not hide that Buckingham Palace lacked an entertaining space large enough to accommodate the many guests as required. In the early 1850s, Sir James Pennethorne was invited to design such a space the cramped and outmoded kitchens were completely remodelled, creating new, modern rooms capable of keeping up with the relentless demands of the royal court.
