AFTER FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Sarah, Lady Lyttelton (1787-1870)

1846

Oil on canvas | 45.9 x 33.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406476

This portrait was copied from Franz Xaver Winterhalter's painting of the reception of Louis-Philippe (RCIN 401378).

Lady Lyttelton (1787-1870) was the daughter of the 2nd Earl Spencer. She married the 3rd Lord Lyttelton, who died in 1837. In the same year she became Lady of the Bedchamber, then Lady Superintendent of the Royal Children in 1842. Her letters provide an affectionate account of Queen Victoria's children while they were growing up and Royal Family life.
