ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Camp of the 4th Dragoons

1855

RCIN 2500368

Women appear in a number of Fenton’s photographs of life in the British camps. These women were usually the wives of non-commissioned officers who acted as cooks and laundresses for the regiment. The 4th Light Dragoons, who participated in the Charge of the Light Brigade, are seen here with French soldiers (on the left of the photograph). Here Mrs Rogers poses with a small pot, presumably intended to show her serving food to the men sitting around the small table.
