UNKNOWN PERSON
Colonel Sir Thomas St Vincent Troubridge (1815-67)
1854-6RCIN 2500061
Troubridge served with the Royal Fusiliers in the Crimea, seeing action at the Battle of Alma and in the preparations for the Siege of Sevastopol. During the Battle of Inkerman he was seriously wounded, ultimately losing his right leg and left foot. He was invalided back to Britain in May 1855. He was presented with the Crimean Medal by Queen Victoria on 18 May 1855 at the public ceremony on Horse Guards Parade, London. This photograph is a rare portrait of an army officer in a wheelchair. Although the true extent of Troubridge’s injuries have been carefully disguised, it was extremely unusual to show any images of wounded officers.
