ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Major Hallewell at the end of a day's work

1855

RCIN 2500376

Hallewell (1822–69) was a distant relation of Grace Maynard, Fenton’s wife. The families shared ancestry going back to the early eighteenth century. He was an accomplished artist and a watercolour panorama of Sevastopol that he presented to Queen Victoria in 1855 remains in the Royal Collection today. This is one of a number of staged photographs of camp life, showing soldiers relaxing at the end of a day’s work.
